Vacation in the Florida Keys and Fall in love with America,Again

21 Jul 2015 / 0 Comments / by redrumintl

Driving out to the Florida Keys from the mainland you will notice that it is nothing like the rest of America ,in fact it is nothing like mainland Florida. Our first drive down I remember saying to my wife “this is America”,WOW ! Being a New Englander we had never seen anything like that ! And you know, even after 20 years of driving down, the place is still as awesome as the first trip down. You have to drive through hell to get to Heaven !

Most Americans don’t really know how nice this place is, Key Largo (the first island in the chain)is only 18 miles from the main land.Crystaline Caribbean water surrounds a series of islands connected by bridges, the longest being the famous 7 mile bridge in Marathon Key.The Last island in the hundred mile chain of islands is Key West, worth the price of your vacation alone.

The Florida Keys and The Nation Marine Sanctuary have taken care of their environment.Strict rules and regulations have created an place rich with life and at the same time tourist friendly. The Florida Keys are constantly upgrading their parking/fishing areas, roads and highways, which adds  more access and beautiful views of the water, and a more comfortable vacation experience. Pull off the side of the road, anywhere and do a little snorkeling, and you’ll have to agree ! The Keys protect their forage fish (bait fish)which attracts life ,game fish, birds, even mammals. Its not unusual to see a pod of “Dolphin” swimming and feeding ,close to shore.

The  Keys use the old railroad bridges as  free fishing areas, which makes it an affordable way for everyone one to enjoy the ocean. Most of the parking/fishing areas have just been upgraded with new railings, new landscaping, and plenty of trash cans for the most affordable, no hassle, fishing and snorkeling ,you could ask for!

All you will need is a small boat  to access some of the patch reefs(small coral reefs), most are only a mile or so from the islands.Snorkel, fish, and swim on your own little personal coral reef and explore the area ,and with a hundred miles of nautical playground, its very rarely crowded.

If you rent one of the many canal homes in the keys, you can not beat your boat docked in your back yard.Wake up in the morning and take a blast on an ocean so clear, its hard to judge the depth of the water or head to Picnic island for an early morning swim.Picnic island is a small island that is a locals favorite swimming and party area in the Ramrod/Summerland/Big Pine area’s.

And the “fishing” is as good as it gets Anywhere.I have heard fishing reports that the sailfish have been occasionally feeding in 20 ft. of water inside of the main reef line.Sailfishing on a 14′ carolina skiff 5 miles from your dock in Ramrod Key ! Are you kidding me !! You can not do stuff like that on a “Cruise” for the price of admission !

I have not even mentioned Key West, a vacation in itself.People from all over the world come to this island paradise to snorkel, dive, fish, and enjoy the only frost free place in the America. What do you like to do shop, eat, drink,or just walk around historic Duval Street and people watch? Rent Jet-ski’s ,boats, bikes, scooter’s or how about Para-sailing its all here !

So the next time you loose your faith in this great country we live in,visit the only place in America that makes me Happy!!Vacation in the Florida Keys and fall in love with America,Again .

A Cat Island Bahamas Vacation

17 Mar 2015 / 0 Comments / in Assorted/by redrumintl

One of the outer islands of the Bahamas, Cat Island is a quiet vacation destination for those who are really looking to relax. Among its varied pleasures and activities, a little exploration will turn up a historical oddity or two that add to the individual character of the place. Beautiful beaches in natural settings welcome the nature lover and peace seeker alike.

The Hermitage is a bit of an historical oddity, fascinating and strange. The hike up to see this religious site will take visitors through small villages along beautiful trails, full of island flora and fauna. It is located at the top of Mt. Alvernia, which is 206 feet above the sea and the highest point in the Bahamas. The Hermitage itself is made from the limestone of the cliffs, with each piece painstakingly extracted, shaped and set by hand by the Canadian mule-skinner turned Anglican turned Roman Catholic priest known as Father Jerome. The Father built the structure to scale, designed it to fit his rather diminutive form. Beloved by the island people, the priest passed away in 1956 after reaching the ripe age of 80.

Other historical sites include an Arawak cave, found at Columbus point, and plantation ruins, left over from the islands efforts at joining the worlds cotton growers. Deveaux mansion was once the residence of Andrew Deveaux of the US Navy, who participated in the 1873 battles to get Nassau back from Spain. Another well known ruins is the remains of the Ambrister plantation, near Port Howe.

For those interested in water sports, the Cat Island Dive Center is the place to contact. They operate out of the Greenwood Beach Resort and have a variety of diving and snorkeling packages available, and there are many fine areas to explore, offering a wealth of marine life and fascinating geological formations. They also have water sport equipment to rent.

Cat Island is the sixth largest island in the Bahamas, and boasts extraordinary beaches. There are literally miles and miles of virtually undisturbed beaches, where swimming and relaxing can be done in near complete privacy.

Fine meals can be had at several locations on Cat Island. Hawk’s Nest Resort and Marina serves a variety of dishes, but among the best are the fresh, grilled fish and the roasted rack of lamb. Fernandez Bay Village is the place to go for creative and delicious native dishes, served either in the dining room or a patio table by the beach. Greenwood Beach Resort’s Bahaman cuisine is complemented by their marvelous breads, which are baked every day.

Cat Island is an excellent choice for vacationers who are seeking a natural beach experience, and enjoy a peaceful and very laid-back atmosphere. The island can be explored at a leisurely pace, which is a much better way to enjoy the local flora and fauna, as well as to enjoy the local culture. Because it is so much smaller in population than many of the other islands, it’s easier to get a real feel for the people and their way of life. Cat Island is an interesting place that will make a lasting impression on its guests.

Bahamas Vacation

11 Mar 2015 / 0 Comments / in Assorted/by redrumintl

While many people who think about the spectacular water and beaches of Bahamas, choose to go on holidays to the Bahamas for the crystal blue waters, white sandy beaches and popular resorts Bahamas, others who  think about the splendor that inhabits the interior of these islands, come to the islands for an entirely different reason: the inland where has from wildlife to flora to waterfalls.

Taking a hike on any of the islands in the Bahamas isn’t necessarily about the final destination, but rather more about what you might see on your journey to get there. The nature walk guides will know exactly what to look for and can point out all of the local wildlife that you might not notice. If you feel really brave you can feel free to hike around the islands yourself, just be sure you know how to get back to where you started. You should also maintain a healthy respect for nature and keep to the paths. You will find iguanas, parrots and orchids around every corner, so make sure to bring your camera on your all inclusive holiday.

If you aren’t sure where to start, your resort will most likely be able to point you in the direction of the most popular hiking paths. Andros Island is a great place to get started. On this island you can find deserted beaches, mangrove marshes, pine forests and a fresh water reservoir that can all be found on a day hike here. Here you can also take guided nature walks, bird watching and kayaking tours to your hearts delight. This island is made up of harsh terrain in spots, making it a good choice if you are looking for a little bit of a challenge along the way.

One of the most beautiful hikes in the Bahamas is a trek to the highest point above sea level. You will find this point at Mount Alvernia on Cat Island. At 203 feet above sea level you will find a religious retreat, a small monastery built by hand. The view from this point will be breathtaking and could make for a great place to have a picnic lunch, so come prepared. If you are more into bird watching you should head over to the Small Hope Bay Lodge on Andros Island. Nature walks guided by the Nature Conservancy will have you seeing birds you’d never dreamed of seeing. Just make sure to get the most of your all inclusive travel deals and see more of the island than just the seashore.

Start off your Bahamas vacation right by booking a stay at one of the Breezes all inclusive holiday packages. While the all inclusive resorts Bahamas are some of the finest you should venture out and experience the island you are staying on. With so many all inclusive travel deals at Breezes you can’t afford not to go!

Bahamas vacation

The Bahamas officially the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, is a nation consisting of 29 islands, 661 cays, and 2,387 islets (rocks). It is located in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba and Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti), northwest of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and southeast of the United States (nearest to the state of Florida).

The island of New Providence is home to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. New Providence houses 70% of the country’s residents and is the center of economic and government activity. Although much business happens on New Providence, it isn’t all hard work and no play. Nassau is home to many resorts, including several luxury all-inclusive accommodations. One of the most popular resorts, however, isn’t a mega hotel. Compass Point Beach Resort is easy to spot, just look for the rows of beachfront “huts” painted in bright colors. It is described as a resort done “Bahamas style,” Compass Point is a great choice for those looking for an authentic Bahamas vacation without the glitz and glam of a traditional resort. The comfortable rooms will make your Bahamas vacation feel more like staying in a well-appointed guest room at a friend’s beach house than a resort room.

Paradise Island is linked to New Providence Island by a bridge. Worth at least a few hours, if not your entire stay, the world-famous Atlantis Resort is located on Paradise Island. This mega resort has some of the most expensive rooms in the world and is a lot like a miniature beach-front Las Vegas in the middle of the Caribbean. The Atlantis has grandiose architecture, faux Mayan ruins, huge aquariums full of thousands of species of sea life, and the largest casino in the entire Caribbean, with 50,000 square feet of lavish decor and nearly 1,000 slot machines. Spas, nightclubs, and restaurants are on par with anything you could find in a Vegas hotspot. A guided tour of the mega resort is available and may be worth your while if you’re just visiting rather than staying on the property.

The smaller and fewer populous islands in the Bahamas are collectively known as the “Out Islands.” These islands have a lot of personality and great attractions, and are well worth at least a day trip on your Bahamas vacation. The Exuma island chain is about 120 miles southeast of Nassau. Comprised of Great Exuma, Little Exuma, and the Exuma Cays, the beaches and waters are extremely pristine and have been set aside by the government as a national park. Great Exuma has comparatively fewer resorts than some of the main islands given its small size, but all are highly rated. St. Francis Resort, for example, sits on a bright white-sand beach and offers a laid-back home away from home. Rooms are a second away from the beach, where lizards and crabs take advantage of the island’s largely unpopulated coastlines. Because the Exuma Islands are so isolated, diving sites are especially pristine. Mystery Cave is a particularly popular destination, especially for experienced divers. Visited by famous explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, it is a “blue hole,” or underwater sinkhole. While visiting the Great Exuma, stop for dinner at Santanna’s Grill Pit featuring fresh, locally caught lobster and conch.
